On the eve of Twickenham Police Station’s front counter closing, Munira Wilson MP called for a “clear and noticeable” increase in police on the streets.
As part of the Metropolitan Police’s ‘Tough Choices’ programme, police station front counters across London, including Twickenham’s, have been closed.
Since then, Munira has campaigned against the decision, arguing that police front counters were vital for effective neighbourhood policing, and it would be vulnerable people would be affected the most by the closures.
On Friday, Munira Wilson MP said, “For vulnerable or elderly residents who struggle to report crime in other ways, or women and girls suffering abuse for whom it may not be safe to do so, an accessible police counter is vital — and that accessibility is equally important for building public trust.”
With the counter being closed, Munira argued, “Now, more than ever, the Met has to prove that community policing won’t suffer. Local residents need to see a clear and noticeable increase in police on the streets.”
Twickenham Police Station front counter closed on Saturday 28th February. The nearest front counters are now Hounslow and Kingston.
