Reacting to the news that the Government is rushing through a consultation on the Airports National Policy Statement (ANPS), Munira expressed her outrage that the Prime Minister and the Chancellor were seen to be fast-tracking proposals in the face of the Makerfield by-election.

“This announcement has been slipped out by a PM and Chancellor weeks before they’re out of a job,” Munira told The Standard. “While they try to dodge the consequences, it will be local communities, our environment and the taxpayer that pay the price.”

Read Munira’s comments in The Standard here. The public consultation, which will impact crucial decisions around Heathrow expansion, will only last until the end of August, which Munira believes does not provide the full transparency and due process these crucial decisions deserve.

Munira has consistently campaigned against a Heathrow third runway, citing the negative impact on people’s health and the environment, and the fact that the economic benefits have been overstated.

Most recently, Munira raised the financial cost of Heathrow expansion in a parliamentary debate. With too many unanswered questions about who will foot the bill for the sky-high costs of a third runway, Munira called on the Government to ensure greater transparency and accountability about where funds would come from – and to ensure it’s not from taxpayers.

Munira also urged the Government to listen to the abundant evidence about the human cost of expansion, in terms of the impact on people and the planet.
