Today, Munira questioned Matt Hancock, Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, what actions the government are taking to protect BAME people working in health and social care settings from Covid-19

This was following the release of a Public Health England report (see here) looking into the disparities in the risk and outcomes of Covid-19. The report’s findings showed that BAME people are being disproportionately affected by the coronavirus crisis.

Following Matt Hancock’s response, Munira said:

“The PHE report released today showing that BAME people are being disproportionately affected by the coronavirus crisis is incredibly concerning. This means that those who are from a BAME background and work on the frontline in high-risk areas are at an even greater risk.

The government must take urgent action to stem the tide of BAME people losing their lives to the coronavirus.

This must include adequate protections and guidance to ensure BAME health and social care staff can work safely. Access to testing and proper personal protective equipment is a good start.”
