Earlier this week, Munira responded to the Government’s PFAS action plan, branding it “underwhelming” and saying the UK needs urgent action, not more “dithering and delay”, to tackle toxic and dangerous PFAS chemicals in our water.
“I’m extremely disappointed in the Government’s PFAS action plan, which is underwhelming to say the least. The Government wants more time to consult and research, but the research is here and it’s clear. These dangerous chemicals could seriously harm the health of generations to come, and we need urgent action now, not more dithering and delay.”
Munira has been pushing the Government to take stronger action on PFAS chemicals, particularly in the UK’s drinking water. Unlike in the EU, UK guidelines on PFAS in drinking water aren’t legally binding. In November 2024, Munira introduced a Bill in Parliament to regulate PFAS levels in drinking water by law and set statutory limits.
The River Thames in Teddington, in Munira’s constituency, had the sixth greatest concentration of PFAS in the UK between 2019-2022 (eleven times above safe levels set out by the EU).
