Munira is outraged that the Government is rushing through a consultation on the Airports National Policy Statement (ANPS), with which has now been renamed the Heathrow Expansion National Policy Statement (HENPS).
The announcement – buried on the day of the Makerfield by-election – revealed that a consultation on the proposals for Heathrow expansion will only run until 1 September.
“A month and a bit is simply not enough time for communities and MPs to weigh in on major decisions affecting people’s health, our precious environment and taxpayers’ pockets – especially given it will run over parliamentary recess and people’s summer holidays,” said Munira.
As Munira has consistently said in her campaign against a third runway, it is absolutely crucial that decisions around Heathrow expansion be undertaken with full transparency and due diligence in terms of the health, environmental, financial and economic impacts.
“The Chancellor has backed Heathrow expansion in pursuit of ‘growth’, yet the Chancellor’s own growth predictions for Heathrow expansion having been downgraded by 90%, leaving the economic case is in tatters,” added Munira. “This is not to mention the serious questions that need to be answered about the environmental, health and noise impacts.”
