In May 2006, Munira stood for election as a councillor in the neighbouring ward of West Twickenham, where she achieved an 18% swing. She and her two Lib Dem colleagues won all three seats in the ward from third place, leapfrogging Labour and defeating the three sitting Conservative councillors.
In 2005, Munira ran the General Election and Surrey County Council election campaigns in Guildford, where she helped increase Sue Doughty’s vote by 2000, bucking the significant regional swing away from the Lib Dems to the Conservatives. Munira also helped win five county council seats in Guildford.
Munira has been involved in a number of parliamentary and local by-elections, and was a member of the core team in Cheadle, assisting with the busy front desk operation.
Munira has had experience of live TV interviews with Sky News and live radio interviews with BBC Asian Network. She has also gained coverage in her local newspaper as a council candidate and councillor. During the general election, she dealt with journalists from the Guardian, the Times, BBC and ITN.
Public speakingMunira has spoken in debates at federal conference, including
international development, ethnic minority PPC quotas and children and
families policy. At spring conference 2006, she was also a
panel
member in a fringe event “Men, women and work”,
alongside
members of the shadow cabinet.
Munira is a member of the Finance and Strategy Overview & Scrutiny Committee. She is also the council’s representative for London & Quadrant’s South West Thames Regional Committee, which owns housing stock in the London Borough of Hounslow.
