Munira
has been leading a long-running campaign in her ward to improve safety
on one of the main roads that cuts through it. A pedestrian
crossing is to be installed soon, and following a Transport for London
traffic survey, residents will shortly be consulted on further safety
measures.
In
her professional work, Munira is involved in a big national campaign on
child poverty. It is a scandal that 29% of children in Feltham
and Heston live in poverty. Since the Government missed its interim
target
for
reducing child poverty last year, it is looking increasingly unlikely
that it will meet its ultimate target of eradicating child poverty in
the UK by 2020. Munira is helping to gather cross-party
support
for greater resources to be committed to combating child poverty
– it is a scandal that one in four children in our country
live
in poverty.
As
a ward councillor, Munira helped set up a local police
liaison group, identifying and persuading a cross section of local
residents to get involved.
Whilst working for Liberal Democrat Shadow Home Secretary Nick Clegg MP, Munira compiled a dossier of best practice on crime and anti-social behaviour from Lib Dem councils across the country, including damning statistics of Labour’s shameful record on crime. The dossier was used for campaigning in the local elections, with the media and was quoted in Nick Clegg’s platform speech at Federal Conference.
